Taking Yeeld's Surcharging API from design to launch

We told Lemon.io exactly what we needed, down to the time zone and the kind of personality that would fit our team, and they found that person. He onboarded, reviewed the codebase, and worked on closing tickets within two weeks of starting with us.

A new product that handles the compliance merchants can't

Yeeld provides surcharging infrastructure and expert payments advisory, helping merchants and platforms of all shapes and sizes, from e-commerce to travel management to rental companies to nonprofit platforms, design and implement complex payment systems.

Founded by a team of ex-Stripe employees, Yeeld pairs deep hands-on payments implementation experience with products that make sophisticated payment strategies accessible to any business.

Turning payments expertise into a product

Across hundreds of client engagements, Yeeld’s founders kept seeing the same problem: merchants were absorbing credit card processing costs or raising prices for everyone to cover them.

Surcharging, adding a small fee when a customer chooses to pay by credit card, lets merchants recover those costs instead. But doing it correctly is hard.

Fees have to be applied based on the customer’s card, their location, and the merchant’s location, while staying within the card network and U.S state and Canadian provincial rules, that change constantly.

That complexity is exactly where Yeeld operates best, and the team set out to build it into a product: a Surcharging API that handles the logic and the compliance automatically.

Yeeld had a senior engineer on staff to lead the build. What the roadmap demanded was a second senior engineer who could work in parallel and keep the Surcharging API moving from design to launch, without the overhead of a full-time hire the product didn’t yet need.

Why Lemon? Vetting that holds up to a technical bar

Yeeld had known Lemon.io for years.

The two companies first connected when Yeeld explored outside development support for client work, and Lemon’s responsiveness left a lasting impression. When the surcharging build created a real need for senior project-based engineering, Lemon.io was the first call.

Yeeld’s team came out of Stripe and has implemented hundreds of payment systems, so their standard for engineering talent is high.

Yeeld gave Lemon.io a specific brief covering the stack, the time zone, and the working style. Lemon.io returned a short list of senior full-stack candidates with proven track records on comparable projects, which Yeeld could review and interview directly through Lemon’s portal.

I'm technical enough to know what APIs are and how they work, but I'm not an engineer. Being able to trust Lemon's vetting, and still interview and choose the person ourselves, mattered a lot to me.

Shipping within two weeks

Yeeld’s Lemon engineer was fully onboarded, through the codebase, and closing tickets within two weeks of signing. Working alongside Yeeld’s lead engineer, he took on core pieces of the platform:

  • building out infrastructure
  • implementing sales tax logic
  • maintaining the processing fee matrix
  • contributing to Yeeld’s surcharging solutions

Just as important was how the work happened. The developer operated independently, communicated clearly, and needed little explanation, functioning as a true extension of the team.

Lemon.io stayed engaged throughout the project: checking in on progress, confirming the fit was working, and offering additional capacity if the roadmap called for it.

It felt like adding a teammate, not managing a contractor. The engineer just got to work.

A payments product in market

Yeeld’s Surcharging API went from design to launch on the company’s timeline, built to Yeeld’s standard, with engineering capacity scaled precisely to the project.

As Yeeld grows, the team expects to keep building in-house, and to keep turning to Lemon.io for targeted, project-based work where senior engineering talent and fast starts matter most.

For project-based work where we need a senior engineering person who can start fast, Lemon is our first call.
