How much JavaScript developers charge?
Hiring a JavaScript developer isn’t just a technical decision—it’s a strategic move that can make or break your next release. With JavaScript dominating everything from web apps to back-end APIs, demand is sky-high and the talent pool is global. But the cost? That depends on skill, experience, and—most importantly—location. Here’s what the numbers from Lemon.io’s live dataset actually show.
The Market Landscape: A Breakdown by Seniority
For middle-level JavaScript developers, the action is concentrated between $61 and $100 per hour. About 36% of mids charge $61–80/hr, and almost as many—roughly 35%—fall into the $81–100/hr range. Going lower is possible, but rare: only about 11% of middles are available for $41–60/hr, and usually from more cost-effective regions. The rest—around 18%—are priced above $100/hr, either because they bring something special to the table or because of regional demand.
Moving up to senior developers, you’ll find that the most common rates also sit between $61 and $100/hr. Nearly 43% are in the $61–80/hr tier, with another 22% in the $81–100/hr bracket. Seniors priced above $100/hr are not uncommon; roughly 38% fall into the $101–160/hr segment, reflecting both deeper expertise and market realities for senior roles. If you’re hoping to find an experienced senior below $60/hr, it’s almost a myth.
At the very top are the strong seniors — the architects, tech leads, and those who set the standard for the team. Here’s the surprise: almost 70% of strong senior JavaScript developers are still available between $61 and $80/hr, especially if you’re sourcing outside Silicon Valley. About 21% land in the $81–100/hr range, and the rest—roughly one in ten—push into the $101/hr+ bracket, usually for highly specialized expertise or in premium markets.
The Global Talent Map: Regional Variation
Where your developer lives matters—a lot. Eastern Europe and Latin America are absolute powerhouses for JavaScript talent. Ukraine, Romania, Poland, Brazil, and Colombia together make up the bulk of both middle and senior devs in our database, and the majority of their rates sit right in that $61–100/hr sweet spot. Ukraine, in particular, stands out for depth and breadth across all seniorities, including strong seniors.
If you’re hiring from the USA, Canada, UK, Germany, or Australia, expect higher rates—often starting at $100/hr for seniors and up, and rarely dropping below that for strong seniors. You’re paying for local market know-how, timezone overlap, and, often, deeper enterprise experience. These markets are essential if you need local context, but don’t expect bargains.
Meanwhile, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa offer a different mix. Countries like India, Vietnam, the Philippines, Israel, and South Africa are home to a growing share of JavaScript developers, most available between $41 and $80/hr. These regions are your move if budget is your top concern, though senior and strong senior pools are smaller compared to Eastern Europe.
